Who will the Dalai Lama choose to be reborn into and will China authorise the choice?

No, China won’t because they will choose in the first place! So they say. By law! Meaning, Chinese (at least some in according position) actually believe one can regulate reincarnation! Well, can you believe this?

Aug. 20-27, 2007 issue – In one of history’s more absurd acts of totalitarianism, China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission. According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the law, which goes into effect next month and strictly stipulates the procedures by which one is to reincarnate, is “an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation.”

The Chinese polity claim it’s not the 72 year-old Dalai Lama himself to choose who will be the next Dalai Lama (correctly: Whom His Holiness’ soul chooses to be reborn into) but the Chinese.

Sadly this is not a bad joke as one might guess with the heap of irony lying within! Since this month, as reported by newsweek, China has passed a law claiming the guardianship for all Buddhist monks whom they are reborn into. The only thing I can consider good about this it by passing such law China respects rebirth itself.
